Teachers ask for three months of physical classes, hope for CBSE Board Exams in May 2021

Teachers have expressed uncertainty in regards conducting board exams as per normal schedule of February – March and share that a date sheet for May would be more desirable – provided schools reopen from January 1.

“We have completed the syllabus and started with the preparations. Also, a schedule for pre-boards is also ready. Bu the fact remains that students are not ready for the exams just yet. Before we contemplate board exams, we are in dire need of schools to reopen and physical classes to resume!” shared Mrs Rai, Principal, AIS.

Dr. Gupta who teaches Physics in a Government Senior Secondary school expressed concerns over conducting board exams as per schedule. “We have not had one practical class in the year – in such a situation, conducting board exams in March would seem superfluous. Students need to come back to classrooms, be assessed, trained and get their doubts solved before the exams can be conducted,” he added.

As for the exam dates, teachers interviewed agree that a minimum ‘mandatory’ classes for 3 months are essential before the examinations can be conducted. “Students have to be made aware of the changes in exam pattern, conditioned to appear for a three hour paper, write and most importantly given the confidence that they can do it. We need time for all this and exams before May are just not acceptable!” shared Ms. Parul, a senior teacher with over 20 years of experience.

“Ideally, if schools were to reopen from say January 1, then the board can start the practical exams by April 15 and conduct the written exams from May 1. This would given teachers the months of January – March to help students with their doubts, conduct practical classes and also explain some topics which are rather difficult to explain in online classes!”

While sharing the ‘desirable’ dates, experts also cautioned that pushing the papers to June may not be advisable either. A balance has to be sought but really the decision on when to conduct the board exams should only be taken once schools can be opened – if only for the board going classes.
